TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A Tampa jury is recommending that a man convicted of killing two police officers should be executed for his crime.
The penalty phase of Dontae Morris' trial was held Tuesday in Hillsborough County Court.
On Friday, the jury found Morris guilty of two counts of first-degree murder. On Tuesday, it took the jury 54 minutes to return a unanimous decision that Morris should face the death penalty.
The judge will make the final decision on Morris' fate, but said during the trial that he would give great weight to the jury's wishes.
Morris killed David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab in June 2010.
Besides the police killings, Morris was convicted earlier this year of an unrelated murder and is awaiting trial in two other murder cases.
